HMY have just completed the fit-out for University of Kent Business School at the Chatham Historic Dockyard in time for the start of the new academic year.
The Sail & Colour Loft, built in 1723, is a Scheduled Ancient Monument where the sails of HMS Victory were made. Working closely with Historic England and Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust, we designed three floors of contemporary university facilities whilst enhancing the historic fabric and features of the building.
The challenge was to provide cellular accommodation within what were historically large open plan spaces and not destroy the sense of openness. The use of glazing and wave form walls provide long views at high level to the historic structures whilst also providing the necessary privacy for seminar rooms and offices at low level.
